United Monolithic Semiconductors (UMS) is a French/German joint venture company founded in May 1996 by THOMSON-CSF, Daimler-Benz Aerospace and TEMIC. The mission of UMS is to supply leading edge III-V compound semiconductor components for both professional and consumer markets. The former GaAs activities of both Thomson and Daimler-Benz have been brought into the new company whose headquarters are located in Orsay near Paris. The company has entities in Orsay (United Monolithic Semiconductors S.A.S.) in France, and Ulm (United Monolithic Semiconductors GmbH) in Germany. UMS is an independent company with a workforce in 2007 of around 220 people. Mother companies are now EADS Deutschland GmbH and THALES S.A..
Both entities are working closely together and are complementary structured. The semiconductor wafer processing is part of the UMS GmbH, Ulm and all backend activities (e.g. on-wafer testing, inspection, dicing and picking) is done at UMS S.A.S., Orsay. In addition the modelling and design departments are also part of the UMS S.A.S.
UMS has developed and maintains several GaAs technologies for different microwave and mm wave applications. Low-noise processes as well as high power processes are supported and also available for space projects. A strong collaboration with national and European space organisation has led to space evaluations for nearly all GaAs technologies offered.
